This document provides a working guide for Manufacturing System's Test
production/system-integration testing of the Griffin Jr. (GPX-240/340/440/
640) product line. It covers all power-on functions (set-up and test) and
is specified by the manufacturing assembly procedure. System test time is
approximately 4 hours (3 hours of DEMON and 1 hour of NITRO).

3.11 (for 4517 tests) SCSI Converter Bd Test Fixture (per Test Engr) NOTE: The 640 should be testable in exactly the same environment and
test-beds currently used for the GPX-240/340/440 systems.
o Attach terminal (Item 3.1) with cable (Item 3.2) and connect 9-pin
end to appropriate connector (SERIAL 2 on 440, COM 1 on 240) on
rear of system.o Connect keyboard to terminal and install power cables to both the terminal and the system chassis.
NOTE: IF 220 VAC IS REQUIRED ON THE SYSTEM, MAKE SURE THAT THE RED
SWITCH AT THE BACK OF THE CHASSIS IS SET FOR 220V AND THAT THE
220V LINE CORD IS USED.o Power system ON by pushing rod at front of unit.
o System will BEEP and begin running power-on self-tests (POST).
If system is a 240, you must press a 'LONG-BREAK' on the keyboard
(FUNCT + 'B' on 4313 or FUNCT + '2' on 4314) within 5 seconds to
get display to appear on the CRT (only needed on first power-up).o Carefully observe the self-test messages for any failures.
o The SCSI controller will attempt to find any Hard-Disk Drives.
It should report 'TARGET 0 LUN 0 INSTALLED AS DRIVE:C' and if a
second drive is present, it reports 'TARGET 1 ... as DRIVE:D'.
(Unexpected results may point to assembly problems!)o System prompts 'PLEASE ENTER "1" FOR SETUP ...' Press '1'.
o Review the Set-Up reported on the screen and select each item that
needs changing to match the entries in the appropriate Table below
here. (Items are selected by number). REFER TO CUSTOMER MSO FOR
CORRECT HARDWARE CONFIGURATION! o When the Set-Up is complete, select menu item "E" (END AND REBOOT)
and press <RETURN> twice to REBOOT SYSTEM.

NOTE: If the disk drives are already formatted, then skip this section.
o If the customer's software is available and their SECURITY KEY
has been installed, then load their DIAGNOSTIC TAPE and Reboot the
system. If not, use CAPTIVE SECURITY KEY (Item 3.4) and CAPTIVE
DIVE TAPE (Item 3.6 ). o When prompted, enter the appropriate PUBLIC KEY # to match the
SECURITY KEY (either from the document accompanying the customer's
DIAGNOSTIC TAPE or the CAPTIVE PUBLIC KEY # (XXXXXXXX) for DIVE).o Select DIVE 'FORMAT' option from menu.
o Select NUMBER OF DEVICES and enter DRIVE NUMBER TO BE FORMATTED
when prompted. ('0' = System Drive, '1' = Add-On drive)o Select FORMAT option when prompted.
o Select STANDARD FORMAT when prompted.
o Warning messages will be prompted; Select "YES" to all prompts.
(DIVE FORMAT WILL START) 380 MB Drive takes approx. 30 Minutes.
o Insert the latest Rev. OPERATING SYSTEM TAPE and Power the system
OFF and back ON again to REBOOT the system. NOTE: DO NOT DEPRESS ENTER at the System CONTINUE prompt. Wait for the
15 second time-out to complete, followed by the automatic tape
BOOT operation. IF THE SYSTEM NEVER TIMES-OUT PAST THE 'CONTINUE'
PROMPT, BIOS SETUP IS PROBABLY INCORRECT!o When system prompts 'IS THIS AN MBF TERMINAL ?' Enter <Y>.
o Menu of OPTIONS appears. Select 'F' for FULL INSTALLATION.
o Respond "YES" to all warning messages. FILE SYSTEM CREATION
messages should be displayed. o When system prompts CHANGE TIME ZONE menu, select PACIFIC
DAYLIGHT TIME. Select "YES" to DAYLIGHT SAVINGS prompt.o Set current DATE and TIME by following screen prompts.
o Enter <RETURN> for all PASSWORD prompts.
o The system prompts for O.S. Tape removal and insertion of CONFIG-
URATION TAPE. Insert the appropriate CONFIG RECORD tape
(Customer's tape if using customer's SECURITY KEY or Captive
CONFIG RECORD (Item 3.3) matching Captive SECURITY KEY (Item 3.4)) (Each SSN (system serial number) will have a unique CONFIG RECORD
tape, but some international systems get them overseas instead).o System will display Configuration Tape menu.
o Press <RETURN> to continue, then respond "YES" to INSTALL
CONFIGURATION RECORD. (Finishes quickly). o System prompts 'PRESS <RETURN> TO MAIN MENU, OR "r" TO REBOOT.'
Remove CONFIG RECORD tape and then press "r". o System prompts ' WAIT 10 SECONDS FOR REBOOT PROMPT AND
THEN - REBOOT THE SYSTEM NOW'. Power the system OFF and back ON
to REBOOT the system from Hard Disk. o System should LOAD O.S. FILES, then Display SOFTWARE PROPRIATARY
INFORMATION message, PARTITIONING INFORMATION, and then the
"login" prompt. o Enter "root" and <RETURN> and <RETURN> for the "password" prompt.
The SHELL prompt (#) appears.
o At the '#' prompt, enter "diskadd X" and <RETURN> where:
X = '1' for 2nd disk on 1st controller or
X = '10' for 1st disk on 2nd controller, or 11 for 2nd, etc.. o Use the "Y" default partition values when prompted and enter new
partition names for system's 2nd drive as "usr1" and "usr3". If doing a 3rd or 4th system drive, choose "N" at default values
and make 3rd and 4th drives each a single (full size) partition.
Name 3rd as "usr4" and 4th as "usr5". NOTE: Assigning of drives as 1st, 2nd, etc., is done in order
of SCSI ID (0 = 1st) for all drives on 1st controller, then in
order of SCSI ID on the 2nd controller.
o With the OPERATING SYSTEM TAPE inserted and the terminal at the
'#' prompt, enter "mbfinstall" and three <RETURNS>, then enter
another <RETURN> at the 'O.S. TAPE FORMAT?' prompt. The tape
should load the EXTENDED FILES menu (3 minutes). Select menu
option #5 (UNIX UTILITIES) and <RETURN>. Enter "Y" to 'ARE YOU
SURE' prompt. When menu reappears, enter "S" for START and
<RETURN>. o At the '#' prompt, enter "format /dev/rdsk/f03ht" and <RETURN>.
Follow default prompts for proper drive and warning messages. o The following command can be used to COPY files in the current
disk directory to FLOPPY DISK: "tar cvf /dev/floppy *" and
<RETURN>.
o With the special NITRO TAPE (Item 3.7) inserted and the terminal
at the '#' prompt - ENTER - <tar xvf /dev/tape> and <RETURN>. The
tape should copy the NITRO programs to the system disk and the '#'
prompt then returns. o Remove the NITRO TAPE from the system.
o At the '#' prompt, enter "init 1" and <RETURN>. The system will
go into SINGLE USER MODE. Enter two more default <RETURNS> to get
the '#' prompt back. o Enter "configure" and <RETURN>. The system will display the
current CONFIGURATION MENU.o Select menu item for <ADD A DEVICE>.
o At the next prompt enter the RANGE OF TERMINALS TO BE ADDED
(depends on the number of 8 and/or 16 way Controllers installed).
Use the following table for examples:RANGE VALUES PORTS INSTALLED

3-35 TWO 16 WAYSo DEVICE TYPE menu appears. Select menu item for <TERMINALS>.
o TERMINAL TYPE menu appears. Select menu item for <4313>.
o Enter <RETURN> to accept 4313 default parameters.
o Select menu item for <SAVE CONFIGURATION AND EXIT>.
o From '#' prompt, enter "init 2" and <RETURN> to return to the
MULTI USER MODE. Enter <ESCAPE> to get "login" prompt. o Enter "root" and <RETURN> and <RETURN> TO "password" prompt. Any
terminal configuration start-up problems would now display. (The
O.S. will be Shutdown in the next section).
NOTE: INSTALL THE TOP COVER ON SYSTEM (WITHOUT SCREWS) BEFORE TESTING.
o If the system is powered up and in the BOSS VX Operating System,
at the '#' prompt enter "init 0" and <RETURN>. The system will
proceed to SHUTDOWN (takes approx. 1 minute) o If available (and at same revision level as Captive tape), insert
the CUSTOMER'S DIAGNOSTIC TAPE and REBOOT the system. Otherwise,
use the CAPTIVE DEMON TAPE (Item 3.5). o If using the release DIAGNOSTIC TAPE, a prompt will ask for choice
of DEMON versus DIVE. Select <DEMON>. o When prompted, press <ESCAPE> and enter the appropriate PUBLIC KEY
(DMN Key # that comes with the software if loading the CUSTOMER'S
DIAGNOSTIC, or the Captive Key # if loading CAPTIVE RELEASE or
"xyzzy" if loading the SPECIAL (MFG) DEMON TAPE).o The DEMON DIAGNOSTICS should now load.
o Remove the DEMON Tape and insert a SCRATCH TAPE (Item 3.9).
(Ensure the date on tape is still OK for use - tracked by MFG). o If the system has a Floppy Drive installed, insert a scratch
FLOPPY DISKETTE (Item 3.10).o At the main DEMON menu, select <UNIT TESTING>.
o At the TEST menu enter "Q" and <RETURN> (to ensure that all menu
items are aborted before restarting tests). o Select <MEMORY TEST>. At the MEMORY TEST parameters prompt,
toggle <DISPLAY CURRENT OPERATION:> to 'YES' and toggle
<LOOP ON TEST(S):> to 'NO'. All other menu items default is OK.
(Runs one pass of MEMORY DIAGNOSTICS and stops.) o At the same menu, type <RETURN> then "R" and <RETURN> to "RUN"
the MEMORY TEST alone. o While running DEMON MEMORY TEST, press the NMI SWITCH (on the back
of the 330 & 440 or the front on the 240). Observe that a message
displays and that DEMON interrupts to the DEBUGGER program. The
message refers to 'NMI' on the 340 & 440 systems but will say
'POWER FAIL' on the 240. CAREFULLY CHECK FOR CORRECT MESSAGES! o Enter <CONTROL "D"> to exit the DEBUGGER and resume DEMON testing.
While running DEMON MEMORY TEST, momentarily short across the two
(POWER FAIL) pins inside the NMI SWITCH HOUSING (not applicable to
240 systems). Ensure that DEMON again interrupts to the DEBUGGER
program and a 'POWER FAIL' message appears on the screen. Enter
<CONTROL "D"> to return to DEMON MEMORY TESTING. o When one pass of memory testing has completed without errors,
enter <IV> twice to return to main menu. Select <DISPLAY DEVICE
STATUS>. Select <MEMORY TEST STATUS>. Ensure that the MEMORY
TEST summary shows no errors. o Enter <IV> twice to return to main menu. Select <UNIT TESTING>.
At the TEST menu prompt, toggle <DISPLAY CURRENT OPERATION:> to
'NO' and toggle <LOOP ON TEST(S):> to 'YES'; All other menu items
default is OK. o Enter "Q" and <RETURN> to clear past test selections. Enter "ALL"
and <RETURN>. Enter "U" and <RETURN>. (After a short delay, all
devices found by DEMON are selected to run all tests). o Select <PRINTER TEST>. At PRINTER DEVICE menu, type "Q" to abort
printer testing (since printer is not connected).o Enter <IV> three times to begin DEMON testing.
NOTE: Enter <ESCAPE> and <IV> anytime during testing to get back to
DEMON menus for status checking or test selection changes. (All
previous test selections remain in effect until "Q" is typed to
cancel those choices). o Log in the DEMON test start time and observe that all devices are
being tested (by observing screen and Disk/Tape drives). Allow
test to burn-in a minimum of 22 hours. o Select <DISPLAY DEVICE STATUS> periodically through burn-in period
to check for errors at main TEST menu screen. The system passes
burn-in if, after the number of hours required below, all devices
have looped the expected number of passes with NO ERRORS. (See
Section 5 for what to do if errors have occurred).
GPX 240 = 3 Hours (of DEMON)
340 = 3 Hours
440 = 3 Hours
640 = 20 Hours
o ( Under development; Skip test for now)
o It is presumed that all parts of Section 4 have been performed in
sequence to get to this point; If so, remove the DEMON scratch
tape and select <REBOOT> from the Main menu or power the system
OFF and back ON again to boot the OS from disk. o At the BOSS VX screen enter <ESCAPE> to get "login" prompt. Enter
"root" and <RETURN> and <RETURN> for "password".If not following Section 4 in sequence, ensure that:
- 'NITRO' files have been (and still are) loaded to disk (Section 4.7)
- System is in MULTI-USER Mode ("init 2")
- Terminal configuration has been done (Section 4.6). o Enter </nit.test> and <RETURN>. The NITRO test should begin with
the NITRO MENU displayed on the screen.o Select menu item # 3 (CLEAR LOG FILE) and <RETURN>.
o If the system under test is configured with one 16 Way or two
8 Ways and 8 MEG of memory, select menu item # 1 (INITIALIZATION
AND START-UP) followed by <RETURN> three times for defaults. o If the system under test is configured with any other combination
of internal memory and ports, select menu item #1 and <RETURN> o At the current AREA DRIVERS MENU, change the DRIVER TASKS
according to the following table:

TOTAL TASKS : 15 25 20 25 55 o After the CURRENT DRIVERS menu is correct, enter <RETURN> twice
to accept remaining defaults. NITRO will now assign the PORT AND
GHOST TASKS; testing has begun. o After Task Assignment, NITRO will return to the Main menu. Select
menu item # 2 to DISPLAY TESTS. o Record NITRO start time on the log sheet. NITRO must run error
free for a minimum of 1 Hour.
NOTE: If the system was set-up and tested with the CAPTIVE SECURITY KEY
and CONFIGURATION RECORD TAPE, then install the correct CUSTOMER
SECURITY KEY and REBOOT the system using the CUSTOMER'S CONFIG
RECORD TAPE. Install new CONFIG RECORD and remove tape. o At the '#' prompt enter "rconf" and <RETURN>. Ensure that the
configuration displayed on the terminal matches that of the
CUSTOMER'S CONFIG RECORD. o At the '#' prompt enter "mbfversion" and <RETURN>. Ensure that
the SOFTWARE LEVEL displayed on the terminal matches that of the
CUSTOMER'S O.S. TAPE. o At the '#' prompt enter "init 0" and <RETURN>. The system will
proceed to shutdown. (Takes Approx. 1 minute). Then power OFF
the system. NOTE: BE SURE TO REMOVE ALL CAPTIVE TAPES, DISKS, AND SECURITY KEYS
FROM THE SYSTEM AT THIS TIME!!o The System Test is complete. Return to Assembly Procedure.
o Some quantity of SOFT disk errors are acceptable; The numbers
shown below are the allowable RECOVERABLE READ ERRORS (w/o ECC)
versus the number of loops of the DEMON Disk test for the
different models of drive: 115 MB 200 MB 380 MB 760 MB

recoverable error EXAMPLE: A 380 MB disk which has 7 (soft) recoverable read-errors
over the 22 hour period and had completed 231 loops of the
DEMON test (with no other kinds of errors) passes because
231 / 7 = 31, which is greater than 4. o HARD read-errors (non-recoverable) must be isolated by tracking
the bad block numbers printed by DEMON at the time of each error
and then using DIVE to replace those bad blocks. It may, of
course, be a true hardware problem instead. o EXCESSIVE SOFT read-errors may also be isolated by the bad-block
numbers. Determine whether a pattern of repeating the same block
numbers exists and if so, DIVE can be used to replace those
marginal blocks. NOTE: It only takes one marginal block (even though it is recoverable) to
cause the error limits listed above to be exceeded! Such a marginal
block might only fail once every 3 loops, but that's still
unacceptable. o If using DIVE to replace bad blocks, be sure to write the GROWTH
block number on a label on the drive with the date. o There is a P.O.S.T. board that can display errors detected in the
GPX by self-tests that run prior to displaying anything to the
screen. o The SELF-TEST diagnostics can be made to LOOP continuously. If
the SCSI cable is removed from the Adaptec controller and then
the system is powered ON, the SELF-TESTS should loop and run
continuously. A loop counter is displayed at each pass.
o Common SCSI problems can be caused by:
- 50-pin cable installed backwards on one device.
- Two devices being set with the same ID or one device
set with the wrong ID.
- One device connected to SCSI cable but not to Power Supply.

4.1.1 (IF PRESENT), REMOVE THE "ENGINEERING SAMPLE" LABLE FROM THE
PACKAGING BOX.
4.1.2 OPEN TOP OF BOX AND INSURE THAT A POWER CABLE AND TWO KEYS ARE
IN THE PACKAGING LINER. ( KEYS SHOULD NOT HAVE THE ACER LOGO)
4.1.3 REMOVE UNIT FROM BOX AND PLASTIC BAG FROM THE UNIT.

DIAGNOSTIC TAPE AND THE DEFAULT (96139356) SECRUITY KEY NUMBER).
(ALTERNATELY THERE IS A DEFAULT "xyzzy" TAPE AVAILABLE).
4.10.5 THE DEMON DIAGNOSTICS SHOULD NOW LOAD.
4.10.6 REMOVE THE DEMON TAPE AND INSTALL A SCRATCH TAPE (INSURE THAT THE
TAPE'S DATE CODE IS STILL OK FOR USE- TRACKED BY MFG.).
4.10.7 IF THE SYSTEM HAS A FLOPPY DISK INSTALLED, INSERT A SCRATCH FLOPPY
CARTRIDGE.
4.10.6 AT THE MAIN DEMON MENU, SELECT UNIT TESTING (ITEM # 1).
4.10.8 AT THE TEST MENU ENTER <Q> AND <RETURN> (TO INSURE THAT ALL MENU
ITEMS ARE ABORTED BEFORE STARTING OR RESTARTING TESTS).
4.10.9 ENTER MEMORY TEST (MENU ITEM # 7). AT THE MEMORY TEST PROMPT,
TOGGLE SELECT "DISPLAY MEMORY TESTS" TO 'YES'. AND LOOP TESTS TO
'NO'; ALL OTHER MENU ITEMS DEFAULT IS 'OK'. (RUNS ON PASS OF MEMORY
DIAGNOSTICS AND STOPS).
4.10.10 AT SAME MENU, TYPE <R> AND <RETURN> THEN <RETURN> TO "RUN".
4.10.11 WHILE RUNNING DEMON MEMORY TEST, DEPRESS THE NMI SWITCH ON THE BACK
OF THE UNIT AND INSURE THAT A "NMI" ERROR MESSAGE IS DISPLAYED AND
THE SYSTEM IS INTERUPTED TO THE DEBUGGER PROGRAM.
4.10.12 ENTER <CONTROL "D"> TO LEAVE DEBUGGER AND RESUME DEMON TESTING.
WHILE RUNNING DEMON MEMORY TEST, MOMENTARILY SHORT OUT THE TWO
(POWER FAIL) PINS INCLUDED IN THE NME SWITCH HOUSING. INSURE THAT
THE DEMON MEMORY TEST IS INTERUPTED AND A "POWER FAILURE" MESSAGE
APPEARS ON THE SCREEN. ENTER <CONTROL "D"> TO RETURNE TO DEMON
MEMORY TESTING.
4.10.13 AFTER COMPLETION OF ONE PASS OF MEMORY TESTING, ENTER <IV> TWICE
TO RETURN TO THE MAIN MENU. ENTER DISPLAY ERROR LOG (MENU ITEM
# 2). ENTER MEMORY STATUS (MENU ITEM # 7). INSURE THAT THE MEMORY
ERROR LOG HAS NO ERRORS.
4.10.14 ENTER <IV> TWICE TO RETURN TO THE MAIN MENU. ENTER UNIT TEST
(MENU ITEM # 1). AT TEST MENU, TOGGLE SELECT "DISPLAY TESTS" TO
'YES'AND LOOP TESTS TO 'YES'; ALL OTHER MENU ITEMS DEFAULT IS 'OK'

4.13.10 INSTALL THE TOP COVER ON THE SYSTEM AND SECURE WITH THE FIVE
SCREWS AT THE BACK OF THE CHASSIS.
