There have been a percentage of cables that were "keyed" wrong, and usually only at one end of the cable. Before condemning the cable and/or system, please varify that the red stripe on the cable goes to Pin 1 of the connector on both devices. We are also experiencing a percentage of 8-Way cables in which the keyed plastic cover on the connector has been reversed on assembly. This will allow plugging the cable in unknowingly upside down. If you think you have a defective cable, compare the color coding of the cable with one that works. If the colors show up being upside down from the working cable, unsnap both sides of the cover, and reverse the cover. Now you can plug cable in correctly, right side up. These connector panels are assentially the same as the 16-Way connector panel (Ref. Mini Systems Alert # 260). Up to 100 serial devices may be supported via one cluster of connector panels (6 panels with 16 connectors each, plus the the 4 Way panel). Systems which exceed 100 serial devices will require a second cluster of connector panels in a second cabinet. The ISDC Controller is connected internally by a flat cable from the card connectors to the connector panel PCBA. For "trouble-shooting" purposes, a "pin list" for the internal cable is attached. Leibowitz CABLES-BASIC FOUR-CABLE-----------------------------FIB006 Pg002 FIB 00007 08/16/84 *** Refitting 8-Way cables for use on connector panels *** SUBJECT: MBF 8000 series, refitting 8-Way cables for use on the 16Way/8Way/4Way connector panels. REF. DWG. NO. 907668 GENERAL: Under some conditions it will be necessary to refit or convert 8-Way cables so that they may be used with the new connector panels. Such a case would be a customer who is running out of card slots and trades an 8-Way in for a 16-Way. General instructions for the conversion procedure are contained in the Basic Four Document 907668, "KIT CONVERSION 8-WAY/16-WAY CONTROLLER", which should accompany the required parts. This mini alert is intended to provide more detail on the procedure. REQUIRED ITEMS: 1. Tools a. X-Acto knife or razor blade (to remove outer and inner jackets) b. Wire strippers (appropiate for 24 gauge wire) c. Needlenose pliers (to be used in lieu of a special crimping tool). d. Soldering pencil (recommended to make sure that a strong connection is made to the pins). 2. Parts These parts will be included in the kit, the kit will provide enough parts to refit 8 cables. a. Basic Four Document Number 907668 (this document shows what the new wireing should be as well as general instructions). b. 24 guage white wire (to build internal jumpers) c. 8 connector plugs, 15 position d. 8 connector shells with strain relief. e. 120 contact pins (15 per connector have been allotted, this provide for some spsres). f. 8 labels (to change cable part number). g. 8 pairs of screw locks. h. 16 inches of heat shrink tubing (use 2" per cable). i. 16 4-40 screws (these are longer screws to replace those supplied with each strain relief). PROCEDURE: For each cable to be refitted..... 1. Identify the current cable type by the part number on the cable. Page of document 907668 will indicate what the corresponding CABLES-BASIC FOUR-CABLE-----------------------------FIB007 Pg001 new cable will be and the new pin assignments. NOTE: Arrows which tie two wires togather indicate a twisted pair (i.e. the brown and white wires to pins 9 and 1 on the drawing for cable type 907647). 2. Cut off and discard the 8-Way end of the cable as per page 2 of document 907668 (the ground straps have now been cut off). 3. Use an X-Acto or razor blade to strip off 1 3/4 inches of the outside jacket. 4. Unwrap the braided shield (the point of a meter probe or small screwdriver is handy for this). Pull the unwrapped shield away from the stripped end. 5. Again, use the X-Acto knife and remove the inner jacket as in step 3. 6. Repeat step 4 for the inner braided shield. 7. Remove the cellophane which covers the inner conductors. 8. Cut the bundle of conductors such that the remaining length is 3/4 of an inch. 9. Slide a 2 inch piece of heat shrink tubing over the cable end position it so that 1/2 inch of unwraped braid is available. 10. Using a soldering pencil or match (the flame should be no closer 1 inch) heat the tubing so that it fits snugly around the cable. 11. Slide one of the connector shells ("hood") over the cable such that the large open end faces the end of the cable which had been cut off. NOTE: in the drawings on page 3 of 907668 which connectors will be used. For each connector used, strip off 3/16 to 1/4 inch of insulation. Insert the bare wire into the pin (it will slide into the ferrule). 12. Use a pair of needlenose pliers to crimp the wire in the pin. It is recommended that a small amount of solder be applied to the pin/wire where it is crimped. 13. Insert the pin/wire into the appropriate hole in the connector plug. Note that the plug is numbered at the rear, where the pin is to be inserted. Push the pin with the pliers. It may be necessary to pull the pin completly through from the front of the connector. 14. Repeat steps 11 thru 13 till all the required connectors have been used. There may be some jumpers required, these should be made with 24 guage wire supplied. Precut the jumper lengths to 1 1/4 inches, strip each end and connect them to contact pins as required. Insert the pin/wire combinations into the connector plug. 15. After all the connections have been completed, slide the connector shell up against the connector plug and slide a screw lock into each side to hold the connector together. Insert a screw thru each screw lock. CABLES-BASIC FOUR-CABLE-----------------------------FIB007 Pg002 16. The last step is to assemble the cable clamp to the connector shell. Each half of the clamp has a tab which inserts into a hole at the rear of the connector shell. Use the 4-40 screws and 4-40 nuts. The clamp should be snug around the exposed unwrapped braid. The incorrect cables may or may not affect disk operation, depending on the AC power wiring in the site or building. This incorrect cable could potentially cause excessive soft errors, cause the disk to drop ready or remain off-line. The 810 grounding philosophy calls for a single point logic ground/chassis ground tie point. This point is in the primary mainframe. shorting the disk cable pin 1 (logic groung) to the shield violates the 810 grounding scheme. This results in ground loops, etc., the magnitude of which is site dependent. The cables that could be incorect are the Priam internal bus, P/N 907154-001/002 and the radial, P/N 907155-001/002. If these cables have a red pin 1 identifier stripe it is a good cable. If these cables have a black (sometimes blue) pin identifier strip they are the incorrect cables and should be replaced. The black strip indicates logic (pin 1) and shield are tied togather. If you have any of the incorrect cables, order replacement cables: MM280370 907154-001 Radial Cable, short MM280430 907154-002 Radial Cable, long MM280380 907155-001 Bus Cable, short MM280440 907155-002 Bus Cable, long For each 810 system that requires the cable retrofit, Sorbus will be reim- bursed $50.00. Use service code 11 on the IR. Collect all IR's written for the month and submit a Special Billing Request to Data Base, Attn: Noreen Hatzel. Indicate ECN 8596 in the System and Trouble Found section. Since the field will be charged for ordering the replacement cables, the defective cables should be returned on a Defective Material Tag, coded Defective from stock with ECN 8596 indicated in the comments section. This will reimburse you for the cables. ORIGINATOR: J. PROCEDURE: The following documents are provided (see hardcopy of FB 721): 800048 - General Specification Asynchronous Cabling HP 9000 Systems. This specification defines the installation guide lines for facilities distribution wiring system of serial asynchronous data communication using shielded four twisted pair telephone cable with Peripheral/System interface specific RJ45 adapters and MAI Adapter cables. This specification is applicable to HP 9000 Systems, HP Data Terminal Concentrator (DTC), HP RS-232C Serial Terminals and Printers, MAI RS-232C Protocol Converter, and MAI RS-232C Serial Terminals and Printers. To use this specification, first find the figure (drawing) that shows the set-up you have such as; HP Junction Panel to MAI Terminal. The figure will have an item number for the RJ45 adapter or cable to use. Appendix A will cross-reference the item number over the MAI Part Number. Example 1: A customer is connecting a 4314 to an HP Junction Panel on a new install. First, use figure 1 and find the MAI Terminal Except 4315. It shows that the adapters needed are item 2 and item 3 (NOTE: the cable is always item 17 for the RJ45 cabling). Next, turning to Appendix A item 2 = MAI P/N 400788-003 and item 3 = MAI P/N 400788-001. To find the actual pin-outs use the 400788 specification. Example 2: A customer is connecting a 4314 to a HP Junction Panel, he is upgrading from an MPx/AS with existing cabling. First check figure 8 and find the MAI terminal. Find the present MPx/AS cable and the item number for the adaptor cable to use. In this case item 25. Turning to Appendix A you will find that item 25 = MAI P/N 916885-001. To find the actual cabling pin-outs use the 926885 specification. The following are the specifications for the connectors: 300118 - Connector "D" Gender Adaptor Female/Female 303004 - Connector Adaptor, coaxial, BNC, 50 Ohm, Tee, jack-plug-jack 304002 - Connector Terminator, coaxial, BNC The following are the specifications for the RJ45 Adaptors.
