It contains the following features: o 300 LPM print speed in normal DP Print mode. o High speed draft mode at 400 LPM and near letter quality (NLQ) mode at 175 LPM. o Rugged design, using the proven shuttle matrix design of our 150/300 LPM printer and our Dual Mode Printer. o Twice as many print hammers as the DMP which allows it to print at twice the speed. PRINTER-PRINTRONIX-PT-4224--------------------------FIB003 Pg001 o Straight-through paper path for reliable feeding of single or multipart forms, or adhesive labels. Supports up to six-part forms. o Compressed print at 17 characters per inch (CPI). Also supports 10, 12, 13 and 15 CPI, and expanded print (double high, double wide, or both). o Dual (serial and parallel) interface. The serial inter- face allows the PT-4224 to be used for remote applications. o Bar code and electronic forms generation using the MBF Bar Code/Forms Option (BC/FO). Bar code print speed is twice that of the Dual Mode Printer. o User-friendly operator display with English language operator prompts and error codes. 2.0 CONFIGURATION INFORMATION 2.1 MBF SYSTEMS The PT-4224 printer is supported on MPx, Advanced Series, MAI 2000/2500/3000/4000 and 13xx systems. The PT-4224 is supported with both serial and parallel interfaces on all of these systems (however, a Serial Printer Protocol Converter (SPPC) is required for serial connection on 13xx Systems). Printers configured with the Bar Code/Forms Option are serial interface only. See the attached Support Matrix for configuration details. The PT-4224 is software-compatible with the Dual Mode Printer (model 4214), therefore, the PT-4224 is supported with all applications which currently support the DMP. See Section 4.0 for Phase I firmware specifics which may affect compatibility. 2.1 MBF SYSTEMS (Con't) The PT-4224 is supported for graphics printing with MAI Business GRAPH (level 3.1 and above). See note under "Warnings and Cautions" regarding use with Business Graph. The printer is supported for "draft" printing only (all attributes -- bold, character spacing selection, etc. -- are stripped out) on MAI Business WORD. 2.2 PRINTER The configuration options are selected from the control panel. Line spacing, print mode, and form length can be changed directly by using the 6/8 LPI, MODE, and F/L switches on the printer. Other configuration parameters are accessed through the main configuration menu. To change the configuration through the main menu, the printer must be powered up, off-line (OFFLINE READY), and the control panel ENTER switch enabled (unlocked). PRINTER-PRINTRONIX-PT-4224--------------------------FIB003 Pg002 The current configuration may be examined, but not changed, by leaving the ENTER switch locked. To unlock the ENTER switch, press MENU UP and MENU DOWN at the same time while the printer is in the OFFLINE READY state. The message "ENTER SWITCH NOT LOCKED" is momentarily displayed. With the printer at OFF-LINE READY, pressing the MENU DOWN switch and repeatedly pressing the NEXT and PREV VALUE switches displays the main configuration Menu, shown in Table #1. The main configuration menus are: o Character Set o Application Compatibility o Paper Format o Host Interface o Load Parameters o Save Parameters o Diagnostic Selections Once the desired main configuration menu is displayed, the individual parameters can be accessed by pressing MENU DOWN. The individual parameter values or submenus can be listed using the NEXT and PREVIOUS switches. The first value displayed is the currently active value. To load a new value, display the desired value and press ENTER. The printer responds with an audible beep to indicate the new parameter has been selected. Be sure that the ENTER switch has first been unlocked. To permanently save the new value as a power-up default, execute the Save Parameters configuration option. 2.2.1 CONFIGURATION PRINTOUT PROCEDURE The configuration printout lists all of the currently selected configuration parameter values. A sample configuration printout is shown in Figure #1. 2.2.1 CONFIGURATION PRINTOUT PROCEDURE (Con't) The following general procedure can be used to obtain a configuration printout. Refer to Table #1 for an illustration of the switches required to select and dis- play the parameter menus and values. 1. Place the printer off-line. 2. Select and display the CONFIGURATION PRINTOUT menu in the DIAGNOSTIC SELECTIONS menu. 3. Press RUN/STOP. The configuration printout is produced. Be sure to close the printer cover while the configuration is being printed. Failure to do so, may result in a paper jam. 4. Press CLEAR to return to the OFF-LINE READY. 5. Place the Printer ON-LINE. 2.2.2 RECONFIGURATION PROCEDURE PRINTER-PRINTRONIX-PT-4224--------------------------FIB003 Pg003 The following general procedure can be used to recon- figure the printer from the control panel: 1. Obtain a current configuration listing as described in the Configuration Printout procedure of this section. 2. Determine the parameter values that must be changed to meet requirements. Refer to Table 1 for an illustration of the parameter values and the procedure required to select and display the values. 3. Take the printer OFF-LINE and enable (unlock) the ENTER switch as described previously. 4. Select and display the required value(s). 5. Set the value(s) by pressing ENTER. 6. After all parameters have been changed as required, select the SAVE PARAMETERS main menu and press the ENTER switch. This saves the current parameter values as the power-on default values. 7. Press CLEAR to bring the printer to off-line. Dis- able (LOCK) the ENTER switch. 8. Place the printer on-line. The selected values are effective. 3.0 BAR CODE PRINTING WITH THE PT-4224 With the Bar Code/Forms Option (BC/FO), the PT-4224 supports 12 types of bar codes, including Code 3/9, Interleaved 2 of 5 and UPC-A. The BC/FO also provides the capability to do electronic forms generation, create lines and boxes, and print expanded characters (up to 113 times normal size), rotated print (sideways) and reverse print (white on black). See the attached BC/FO Specifications Summary for more information about this option. The PT-4224 with the BC/FO complies with a variety of in- dustry bar code standards, including the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), Department of Defense (LOGMARS) and Health Industry Bar Code Council (HIBC). The BC/FO for the PT-4224 is software compatible with the BC/FO for the DMP (4214). 4.0 PHASE I FIRMWARE 4.1 NATIONAL CHARACTER SETS Under Phase I firmware the printer only supports the following national character sets: 1. USASCII 2. ISO UK 3. ISO German 4. Vendor Standard French ($23$ is # - Spec for ISO French is f) PRINTER-PRINTRONIX-PT-4224--------------------------FIB003 Pg004 The Printer also contains other national character sets, but these are not supported on MBF systems; as such, the configuration menu differs from that described in the PT-4224 User Manual (however an addendum is included with the User Manual to describe the phase differences). Also, the MBF Internation Character set is not supported in this firmware (Phase I.) These are summarized below. Selections in the configuration menu are: USACII - Supported, default set at power on French - Supported, character $23$ does not comply with MBF Standard German - Supported English - Supported, same as ISO UK Danish - Not Supported Swedish - Not Supported Italian - Not Supported Spanish - Not Supported Japanese - Not Supported French Canadian - Not Supported 4.2 BIT 8 INVERSION Bit 8 inversion is not supported in this firmware. As such, the following has been deleted from the printer configuration menu: 1. Under HOST INTERFACE, CENTRONICS: Data Bit 8 Enable - Normal Enable - Inverted 2. Under HOST INTERFACE, DATAPRODUCTS: Data Bit 8 Disable Enable - Normal Enable - Inverted 3. These settings must be changed to conform with MBF Standard to insure proper operation with MBF systems. 2. The emulation names, as displayed on the printer's LCD, are different than those listed in the "MBF Standard" column above. Specifically, "P-Series" is the same as "PT-4214", and "Serial Matrix" is the same as "IBMGP" Subset." The standard for MBF systems is "PT-4214" (P-Series). This cable interconnects the host serial interface cable and the BC/FO I/O panel. As a result of this requirement, the following options have been deleted from the BC/FO configuration menu: PRINTER-PRINTRONIX-PT-4224--------------------------FIB003 Pg006 Address = 0 Switch _ _ Meaning_ _ _ _ 1 RTS Signal Polarity 2 RTS High when Power ON Select 4.5 FUNCTIONAL DEVIATION 1. Enlongated print is activated with SOH "d" ($0164$) instead of SOH "h" ($0168$) as described in the User's Manual. 4.5 FUNCTIONAL DEVIATION (Con't) 2. When an expanded character is used in conjunction with a super/sub-script, a small bar is printed between the characters where the transition is made between the expanded print and the super/sub-script print. 4.6 FUNCTIONAL RESTRICTION 1. Pre-set line spacing, escapes sequences SOH 6 ($0136$) and SOH A (n) ($0141$ "n"), is not available in this firmware (Phase I). 2. Uni-directional printing is not supported in the re- leased firmware (Phase I); as such a slight degradation in black plot printing is expected. 3. In this firmware (Phase I), BC/FO's PMODE command does not work. 5.0 WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS o To avoid paper jams, make sure the cover is closed when printing. o Due to the higher print speed, the PT-4224 printer vibrates more than the DMP, therefore a sturdy printer stand is recommended. This will reduce noise caused by the vibration. o Using Business GRAPH, the output is expanded by 10% horizontally relative to other printers (such as the DMP and PT-4215). This causes pie charts to appear slightly oblong, rather than perfectly circular. The distortion is slight, and probably will not be noticed by most users. The availability of a fix is TBD. o Using the printer on MAI 2000/2500/3000/4000 with OS levels prior to 7.5B, a problem may result if the pro- gramming examples in the User Manual are followed verbatim. The problem is with the 'BO' and 'EO' mnemonics, which do not work correctly on 7.4 releases. The workaround is to delete these mnemonics from the program, or to upgrade to 7.5B. The bulletin pertains to the following printer models: MAI models; PT-4201, PT-4214, PT-4219, PT-4224 & PT-4230. Printronix models; P150, P300, MVP, L150, P600, P3040, P6040, P6080, P6240, P6280 & P9012 History Earlier model MAI Systems exclusively used what is now termed as High Speed or True Centronics Parallel interfaces to drive printers with the Centronics paral- lel interface. The hardware components in the printer and on the system inter- face PCBA were all made compatible to support a fast Strobe for clocking in the parallel print data and pullup and pulldown terminating resistor packs to sup- port a signal cable length up to 30 feet. The Centronics parallel interface driver circuits on 13xx, MPx, AS Series, SPx, GPx 640 and GPx70 Systems and systems using the MAI Multi-function PCBA option or the 4601 Protocol Conver- sion Box all support the High Speed Centronics parallel printers. The Personal Computers (PCs) almost exclusively use what is now termed the PC type Centronics Parallel interface. This interface uses an open collector type circuit and hardware components that support a slower Strobe signal and maximum cable lengths anywhere from 6 to 15 feet. Most System manufacturers now use this PC type Centronics interface. Included in this system list is the MAI 1200, 1400, 1500, 1800, PSx30, GPx240/340/440, GPx30/50, GPx80, GPx60/90 and RPx7000. Required Modification Most MAI and Printronix Shuttle Matrix printers can be easily modified to oper- ate from PC type Centronics parallel interfaces by changing terminating resistor packs installed in them and then limiting the signal cable length to 15 feet. Unless the correct terminating packs are installed, these printers will not print at all from most PC type parallel ports. The recommended cable for Centronics parallel support is MAI P/N 916291-001 (15' long and double shielded). Control PCBA Terminating Resistor Packs Terminating resistor pack configuration varies from one printer to the next as far as location on the Parallel Control PCBA or Interface Connector PCBA. As a general rule if the printer has a 220 ohm pullup resistor pack and a 330 ohm pulldown pack installed (standard MAI configuration), the 220 ohm pack must be replaced by a 1K ohm pack and the 330 ohm pack must be removed and the socket left vacant. MAI P/N for the 1K ohm 14 pin resistor pack is 119003-007. IGP (Intelligence Graphic Processor) or BC/FO (MAI Bar Code Forms Option) PCBA Terminating Resistor Packs The same general rule applies if the printer has an IGP PCBA option installed and the customer wants to input Centronics parallel data to the printer instead of serial data. When an IGP PCBA is installed in the printer, data is first sent to the IGP PCBA then the IGP outputs parallel data (usually Dataproducts parallel) to the Control PCBA. Because the IGP is the PCBA first receiving data from the system, proper terminating resistor pack configuration is more critical to the IGP than the Control PCBA. You can often use the 220 and 330 ohm packs in the Controller PCBA and use the 1K ohm pack in the IGP PCBA. MAI part number for the 1K ohm 14 pin resistor pack is 119003-007. PRINTER-PRINTRONIX-PT-4224--------------------------FIB007 Pg001 PT-4201 Printers The MAI PT-4201 (150 & 300 LPM) printers are the exception to the rule for operating from a PC Centronics parallel port. The terminating resistor pack (only one) is soldered in the Logic A PCBA and is unique in that it combines both the 220 and 330 ohm pack into one component resistor pack. To date no replacement pack has been found or testing performed that allows these printers to operate directly from a PC Parallel port. Solution for these printers is to. use a serial to parallel converter box or MAI 4601 protocol box. NOTE: The PT-4201 printer should not be confused with the Printronix P150 and P300 printers that use different Logic A and Logic B PCBAs with the Logic A PCBA having removable resistor packs.
