INTRODUCTION The Model PT-4223 Laser Printer, provides letter quality printing at approximately 10 pages per minute. The printer produces printing using the Xerographic printing process, but without the acoustic noise normally associated with daisy wheel technology. Acoustic noise is less than 53 dba. Imaging is accomplished by writing onto a photo conductive drum with a laser. beam that is modulated on and off. This contrasts with the standard copier imaging technique which uses lenses to image onto a photo conductive drum. The PT-4223 is supported on all currently offered MBF systems and is available with either a Letter Quality Printer (Diablo) / IBM GP personality or an HP Laser Jet personality. These "personalities" are contained on individual modules that plug into the rear of the printer. Both versions of the PT-4223's PPM are dual interface, supporting RS-232C serial and Centronics parallel. Not all systems support both versions of the the printer (Refer to Section 3 of this FIB for System Configurations). All of the selectable printer parameters, other than the front panel controls, can be set by four eight position DIP switches on either of the PPM's (printer personality modules). The switch settings are explained in Section 2 of this FIB. Following is a summary of operational features and procedures that should be heeded: A. Just like a copy machine, there is a warm-up period of approximately 100 seconds before use. B. To maintain proper print quality, the unit should not be on a surface where it is tilted greater than 2 degrees. C. The unit should never be picked-up or moved by the Top Cover. D. In the normal service contract, it is the responsibility of the user to replace the consumables. The reliability of the printer is directly related to the proper schedule being followed for replacing these items. (Consumables Replacement Schedule in Section 2 of this FIB) E. Use copy-machine quality paper (Xerox 4024 or equivalent). Lighter weight paper may not give acceptable results (acceptable paper weight range - 17 to 24 lb.). Cotton content bond paper is not recommended. The printer supports cut sheets, labels and transparencies having the standard shape. It does not support continuous forms. F. The printer has a single 200 sheet input tray and a manual feed slot as standard. A second 50 sheet input tray is an option. G. The printer is intended for light-to-medium duty applications. It is not recommended as a primary system printer nor as a high-usage system printer. Printing should not exceed 750 pages per day or 15000 pages per month. H. The printer has a test switch on the front panel, which will perform a printer diagnostic self-test. If held several seconds with printer in off-line mode, it will print and eject both a test print and configuration record. Also clears error condition and display after the displayed error is corrected. 2. CONSUMABLES REPLACEMENT FREQUENCY AND SWITCH SETTINGS A. This printer is available on systems all across our product line to fill needs as defined by our vertical markets. It is available with either a Letter Quality Printer (Diablo)/IBM GP personality module or an HP Laser Jet personality module. The PT-4223 is unique in that, although categorized as a "printer" from a software perspective, it actually is a "copy machine" from a service and support perspective. This announcement assumes that the printer is unpacked and installed properly following the instructions con- tained in the User Guide. Here is a summary of key operational features and recommended proce- PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB002 Pg001 dures that need to be heeded: A. Just like a copy machine, there is a warm-up period of approxi- mately 100 seconds before use. B. To maintain proper print quality, the unit should not be on a surface where it is tilted greater than 2 degrees. C. The unit should NEVER be picked up or moved by the Top Cover. D. In the normal service contract, it is the responsibility of the user to replace the consumables. The reliability of the printer is directly related to the proper schedule being followed for replacing these items. E. Use copy-machine quality paper (Xerox 4024 or equivalent). Lighter weight paper may not give acceptable results (acceptable paper weight range - 17 to 24 lb). Cotton content bond paper containing cotton is not recommended for reliable operation. F. Take great care to follow the Installation Instructions in the User Guide. Failure to follow these directions may prevent the printer from operating. G. Make sure that the printer is located in a place that is: o Level, sturdy and rigid (not wobbly) o Out of the direct sunlight o Away from heaters and heating vents o Away from extremely cold temperatures o Away from inflammable or corrosive gas concentrations o Free of excess dust or moisture o Free of vibration o Near good electrical outlet (see section 3.0 for power reguirements) o At least 10 cm (4") from right side and rear walls to permit unrestricted ventilation. Also allow at least 28 cm (11") front access space and at least 30 cm (11.8") for left side access space. So you think the printer is ready to go? Take a minute and look over the following checklist to verify that you've done everything. Refer to the User Guide Instructions for details about the items on the checklist. o Is the printer setting on a solid, level surface? Is it located away from sunlight, excessive dampness, explosive dust or corrosive gases, vibration, and cold air? o Is sufficient clearance provided around the printer to provide easy access and sufficient ventilation? o Has the shipping screw been removed? o Are the packing wedges and transfer unit shipping tape removed? o Is a print drum installed, with cleaning blade guard pin removed? o Is the toner collection bottle installed? o Is a developer cartridge installed on the bottom of the toner hopper and a toner cartridge installed in the toner hopper? PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB002 Pg002 o Is paper installed in the paper tray? o Is a personality module plugged in at the rear of the printer? Are all configuration switches set for proper interfacing with your computer (see the User Manual, Personality Module Manual or Section 2.1 of this Announcement)? Are the two captive screws on the Personality Module tightened in place (this provides chassis ground to the the board)? Refer to the drawings below to become familiar with the locations and functions of major assemblies on the PT-4223. Refer to figure 1-1 in the service manual M8202A or Hardware announcement 13 for drawings. The laser printer has many user-friendly features. It incorporates a LCD (liquid crystal display) two line display window that shows, during normal operation, the selected font, top paper tray size, font point size, character spacing, and line spacing. This display alternately serves as an error message display during abnormal printer conditions. The printer is capable of printing a self test status report showing the revision level of the firmware, the configuration DIP switch settings, a summary of errors, the names of installed fonts, the names of selected fonts, and a printout of the characters in each font. This report is generated by pressing the TEST button with the printer OFF LINE. All existing diagnostics for LQP can be used for this printer, except when the HP LaserJet personality module is installed or the IBM GP emulation is selected. There are numerous operator controls and indicators on the front panel. A diagram and summary of these features is shown below: Refer to Hardware Announcement 13 or the PT-4223 Laser Printer User Guide for Control Panel switch and indicator information. It is not necessary to understand the technical details of how the printer works in order to operate it, but having a general idea of its inner workings can be quite helpful. Since this is somewhat new technology for a printer, let's take a few minutes to understand how it works. The printer uses an electrophotographic process and a laser beam system. The laser beam is focused through a lens and mirror onto a rotating, negatively charged print drum. The areas on the drum exposed to the laser beam lose their negative charge. The resulting pattern of charged and discharged areas on the drum form an image of the data received from the computer. As the drum rotates, positively charged toner is applied to the drum surface by a magnetic brush consisting of iron and toner particles. The positively charged toner particles attach to the negative area of the image on the print drum (i.e., the areas of the drum not exposed to the laser beam). The diagram below summarizes the overall internal workings and assemblies: PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB002 Pg003 Refer to Hardware Announcement 13 or figure 3-1 in the Service Manual M8202A for the printer component diagram. As mentioned earlier, it is vital to replace consumables at scheduled intervals and to perform the proper maintenance at the same time. This scheduled maintenance is covered in detail in both the User Guide and Service Manual. Use the following chart as a guide to determine the points at which this maintenance should be performed: CONSUMABLES REPLACEMENT FREQUENCY PROCEDURE FREQUENCY _______________________________ ___________________________ Replace Toner Cartridge Approx. 5000 sheets* Replace Toner Collection Bottle Approx. 10,000 sheets Replace Developer Cartridge Approx. 28,000 sheets or semi-annually** Replace Print Drum Approx. 28,000 sheets or semi-annually** Inspect/Clean Fuser Approx. 10,000 sheets Replace Fuser Approx. 100,000 sheets*** Replace Ozone Filter Approx. 150,000 sheets Clean Charger Approx. 10,000 sheets Replace Charger Approx. 50,000 sheets Clean Transfer Unit Approx. 10,000 sheets Replace Transfer Unit Approx. 50,000 sheets Replace Transfer Unit Paper Guide Approx. 100,000 sheets * The printer will indicate when a new toner cartridge is required. It is not necessary to replace the toner cartridge prior to this indication. ** Whichever event comes first. *** Fuser life of 100,000 sheets assumes roller pressure is released (to prevent flats) when not in use for periods exceeding two weeks. Pressure is released by turning the release handle down to the horizontal position. For details about all the features and functions of the PT-4223 refer to the User Guide or the Service Manual (see REFERENCE DOCUMENTS section). 2.0 CONFIGURATION INFORMATION 2.1 Printer The PT-4223 is supported on all currently offered MBF systems and is available with either a Letter Quality Printer (Diablo)/ IBM GP personality or an HP Laser Jet personality. Interim firmware will be shipped in the printer until final firmware is available. Some of the functionality and DIP switch settings are different between the interim and final versions. These differences are very minor. THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WAS WRITTEN DESCRIBING THE PARAMETERS THAT WILL BE IN THE FINAL FIRMWARE. An Addendum documenting the functionality of the interim firmware and the known bugs will accompany each Hardware Announcement. The FIRMWARE REV. level of the printer if interim firmware is installed is 44A511387, as shown on the SUMMARY SHEET. 2. Slashed zeroes print slightly lower on the print line than PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB002 Pg019 other characters. 3. The letter-quality printer driver on MPx systems, OS levels prior to 8.6C, doesn't work correctly in the 8-bit mode. This impacts using the MBF international extended character set and other 8-bit requirements. 7.2 Miscellaneous Issues 1. If a jam occurs during a spooled job, it is likely that TOF (top of form) position will be lost. This is because the laser is a page printer and has no ability to manually reposition the paper after clearing a jam. The workaround is to delete the job, power the printer down to clear the buffer, and resubmit the job. 2. Once a sheet of paper has been run through the printer it should not be reused (even if it is blank). The paper becomes slightly curled when it is heated by the fuser the first time, and it is likely that the paper will cause a jam if it is run through again. 8.0 HELPFUL HINTS 1. In order to use the printer as a Data Processing printer when printing 132 column program listings, do the following: Via the control panel, select; Landscape, Gothic Font, and 8 LPI. Via a program, set the printer to 13 CPI, as follows: PRINT(1)'BO',$1B1F0B$,'EO' (HMI ESC command) to change back to 10 CPI: PRINT(1)'BO',$1B1F0E$,'EO' (HMI ESC command) 2. The fuser pressure roller should not be left engaged if the printer is not going to be used for 2 weeks or longer. The fuser pressure roller handle is inside the printer and can be accessed through the side panel. It is the orange handle with a round, white label marked PRINT. Failure to disengage the roller pressure will cause a flat spot causing inconsistent print quality. 3. It is recommended that all people using the printer should view the "PT-4223-3 Printer User Service" video. This tape should be available at the Branch, Subsidiary, or Dealer office. ADDENDUM TO THE PT-4223 HARDWARE ANNOUNCEMENT The function of certain DIP switches and some international languages will not operate as documented in the PT-4223 Hardware Announcement for units shipped with interim firmware. This only effects printers with LQP (Diablo)/IBM GP Personality Modules. These units are identified by FIRMWARE REV. 44A511387 as shown on page one of the test SUMMARY SHEET (the SUMMARY SHEET is printed by pressing the TEST button on the front panel with the printer OFF LINE). If your unit has interim firmware, then substitute the changes listed below until final firmware is installed. The final firmware will have a different Revision level. 1. All of the DIP switches function as described in the Hardware Announcement, with the following exceptions: PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB002 Pg020 STANDARD SWITCH SETTING FUNCTION ------ ------- ---------------------------------------------------- 1-7 OFF Not Functional 4-4 OFF National Character Set Selection (see below) 4-5 OFF 4-6 OFF 4-5 4-6 4-7 National Character Set Selected OFF OFF OFF USASCII OFF OFF ON French OFF ON OFF German ISO OFF ON ON UK ISO ON OFF OFF Danish ON OFF ON Swedish ON ON OFF Italian ON ON ON Spanish 4-7 ON Forms Length - If ON, the forms length is defined . based on the paper installed in the main paper tray. If OFF, the forms length is defined as the default length for the emulation selected. 2. The interim firmware version of the printer will not support several of the MBF international character sets, as follows: Language Hex Code Normal MBF Character Printer Prints -------- ------- ----------------------- ------------------------- Swedish $24$ "$" Swedish currency symbol French $23$ British currency symbol "#" $5C$ "c" with cedilla "C" with cedilla Italian $23$ British currency symbol "#" $40$ " " "@" $5C$ "c" with cedilla " " Danish Nearest set is MBF Norwegian (8 hex codes do not conform). Spanish Nearest set is LA Spanish (11 hex codes do not conform). 3. The following are known firmware bugs in the interim firmware: A. The printer occassionally "hangs" when a toner out condition is detected. The only way to recover from this condition is to cycle power on the printer resulting in the loss of any data stored in the printer's buffer. B. In the IBM Graphics Printer emulation, the ESC n (n) command [set graphics aspect ratio] does not effect printing using ESC Z [quadruple . density graphics]. C. In the Diablo emulation, the printer should send a status report to the host in response to an ESC SUB 1 command from the host. The response is sent but all fault conditions, such as paper out, are not reported. This does not result in a data loss because the printer does send an XOFF to the host when a fault is initially detected. D. In either emulation, if the forms length is selected via the DIP switches as determined by the size of paper in the main tray and if a command is sent to the printer from the host to switch from portrait to landscape orientation, then the print width is restricted to 80 columns at 10 cpi. This bug does not effect changes in orientation made from the operator control panel. PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB002 Pg021 E. In either emulation, printing from the auxiliary 50 sheet tray is slower than from the main tray. At this time it is not clear if this is a mechanism characteristic or a firmware bug. If it proves to be a Jmechanism characteristic, then a future ECN will amend the section of the body of the procurement specification defining print speed. F. In the Diablo emulation, the printer only allows 22 horizontal tabs when the autojustify command is used. Under other conditions, 32 horizontal tabs are allowed. G. In either emulation, the printer enters a mode in which the TOP TRAY indicator is lit but paper is drawn from the bottom tray. This occurs very infrequently. H. In the Diablo emulation, bolding doesn't work. This effects the start foreground mnemonic in BOSS/IX. I. In Diablo mode with word wrap off, if the character in column 80 is a space and the character in column 81 is printable, the character for column 81 is printed in column 80 instead of being ignored. J. In the Diablo emulation, upon paper out, the printer sends an XOFF. The printer does not send an XON when paper is installed into the printer unless the ONLINE switch is toggled. The workaround for this is to instruct the user to turn the printer offline prior to installing paper. into it. K. In the Diablo emulation, if the Courier 10 font is selected and the character spacing is set to 12 CPI and if bolding is selected via and ESC 0 command, the printer reverts to 10 CPI when bolding is deselected. AFTER UPGRADING THE PRINTER TO PRODUCTION FIRMWARE, THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAN BE IGNORED. REFER TO BASIC FOUR HARDWARE ANNOUNCEMENT 13 FOR DRAWINGS. ORIGINATOR: Tom Sears PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB002 Pg022 FIB 00003 12/29/87 *** IBM character set 2 firmware bug [ WPS 414 ] *** There is a firmware bug in the PT-4223 when using the MBF/LQP emulation. Characters in IBM Character Set 2 in the range of 80 - 9F hex cannot be printed, which means that this character set is not supported. The 32 characters in this range are used in non-English alphabets and most of them are available in the MBF Extended International Character Set, so this is not a serious problem. The character sets are shown in the PT-4223 User Manual (M0047A) in Appendix I. There are no plans to fix this problem at this time. The firmware is in a kit (MBF P/N 400688-191) that includes four chips (Vendor P/N 44A511393, Rev. X5). The rework involves removing the old chips located at U7, U8, U24, and U25, and installing the new ones (labelled X5 393) on the MBF-LQP/IBM Personality Module. The details about this change are in ECN 12677. The following list summarizes the bug fixes in this release: 1. Printer hangs with toner out. 2. Printer doesn't always detect toner nearly out. 3. Printer doesn't bold (double-strike) when line contains an ESC &' sequence. 4. 'ESC (n)' doesn't effect 'ESC Z'. 5. 'ESC SUB 1' doesn't report faults. 6. In some circumstances, form width remains 80 columns when LANDSCAPE is selected via a software command. 7. Printer doesn't send Xon after paper out and 'ESC SUB 1'. 8. Column 81 printed in column 80 if word wrap on. 9. 12 cpi bolded reverts to non-bolded when changing to 10 cpi. 10. Pitch setting is reset when orientation (PORTRAIT/LANDSCAPE) is changed. 11. Excessive printer warmup time when toner is low. 12. Upon detecting a fault, the printer sends NAK Xoff. 13. Forms length defaults to 66 lines regardless of paper size. 14. Printer doesn't send Xoff when covers are opened. 15. Printer sends status response when 'ESC SUB 1' is sent. 16. Printer doesn't send Xoff when the toner collection bottle is full. The font cartridges allow the use of different character styles and sizes. There are eight new font cartridges. Each cartridge contains a number of different fonts, so that, including the three resident fonts in the PT-4223, there are now a total of 29 different fonts available for the MBF/IBM version of the PT-4223, and 23 different fonts for the HP version. The cartridges are listed below: Cartridge Works with Works with Name Description MBF/IBM Vers. Also attached are some examples of how the font cartridges can be used. Note that cartridges 3, 4 and 5 are for the MBF/IBM version of PT-4223 only. Cartridges 13 and 14 are for the HP version only, and Cartridges 1, 2, and 23 are for both versions (see ***). As noted above, the Dutch font is very similar to Times Roman, which is a font style commonly used in publishing (the Times Roman name is protected by copyright, hence we use a differnt name). Likewise, the Swiss font is very similar to Helvetica, another commonly used font style. The names Dutch and Swiss do not have anything to do with languages or international characters, so don't confuse them. The Dutch and Swiss fonts are called "proportional spacing" fonts, for reasons that are explained below. There are some restrictions which apply when using these types of fonts. These restrictions are described later, in the section on proportional spacing fonts. There are also some minor restrictions which apply to the other fonts. These are listed in the "Summary of Restrictions". The sections which follow provide more detailed information about the font cartridges, including an explanation of what is meant by a "font", how the optional fonts are used in various types of applications, how fonts are selected, and samples of the various fonts. 2.0 WHAT IS A FONT? There are four factors which combine to designate a particular font. The first is the font style. There are five font styles available for the PT-4223: Courier, Prestige Elite, Letter Gothic, Dutch, and Swiss. The second factor is point size, that is, the actual height of the characters in the font. The greater the point size, the larger the size of the text. Some cartridges contain the same font style in a number of different point sizes, for example, Swiss 10 point and Swiss 8 point. The third factor is attributing. This includes bolding and italicizing (a font can have no attributes, in which case it is called normal). The fourth factor is the character set, that is, which symbols are contained in the font. The character set which is normally used with the MBF Letter Quality Printer/IBM version of the PT-4223 is called Set 2. There is also a character set called Roman 8 and a set called Legal. With the HP verison, the Roman 8 PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB009 Pg002 set should be used. You can also use the Roman 8 set with the MBF/IBM version, as long as you do not require foreign character sets. The Legal set is a special character set which contains the Copyright, Registered Trade Mark, and other special symbols. Refer to the paragraph below for more information about legal character set fonts. By combining each of these four factors, we can define a unique designation for each font. Some examples would be: Font Style Char. Set Attrib. Point Size ---------- --------- ------- ---------- Courier Set 2 Normal 12 pt. Courier Legal Italic 12 pt. Prestige Roman 8 Bold 10 pt. The Font Cartridge Reference Table attached to this addendum contains a complete list of the combinations that are contained in each cartridge. In general, however, it will not be necessary to consult this table when choosing an optional font cartridge. Simply locate the desired font from the attached samples, and verify in the table at the front of this addendum that the cartridge containing that font works with your version of the PT-4223, whether MBF/IBM or HP. 3.0 LEGAL CHARACTER SET FONTS Some of the optional font cartridges contain fonts called "legal character set fonts". There are nine of these fonts available: Cartridge 1: Courier Normal Legal, Bold Legal and Italic Legal (3 fonts) . Cartridge 2: Prestige Normal Legal, Bold Legal and Italic Legal (3 fonts) Cartridge 3: Gothic Normal Legal, Bold Legal and Italic Legal (3 fonts) The legal characters set fonts are the same as the regular fonts, except that they contain some special characters in place of certain characters in the regular fonts. The characters are: Character in Character in regular font legal font_ ^ | ~ Simply by selecting a legal character set font on your printer, the characters shown on the right will print when you enter the characers shown on the left on your keyboard. 4.0 HOW TO USE PT-4223 FONT CARTRIDGES The PT-4223 font cartridges are inserted into the font ports in the front of the printer. Once installed, the desired font can be selected either from the control panel, or through a software command from the host computer. To select a font from the control panel, follow this simple procedure: 1) Insert the cartridge into one of the font ports in the front of the printer. 2) Take the printer off line by pressing the ON LINE switch. PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB009 Pg003 3) Press the FONT switch until the desired font is displayed on the control panel display. 4) Place the printer back on line and print your document as usual. To select a font from a program, use the Font Select command. This command functions as follows: (Refer to the PT-4223 User Manual for complete details about this command). NOTE: Changing fonts within a document is not currently supported by MAI Office Business Word. FORMAT: ASCII HEX BASIC ---------- --------- ---------------------- ESC SP (n) $1B20(n)$ CHR(27),CHR(32),CHR(n) After receiving the above command, the printer begins printing using the font specified by the parameter (n) as defined below: (In ASCII and BASIC formats, (n) is a decimal number; in HEX format, (n) is a hexadecimal number) Bit 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 Selection x x x x x 0 0 0 Resident fonts x x x x x 0 0 1 Left most cartridge x x x x x 0 1 0 Left-middle cartridge x x x x x 0 1 1 Right-middle cartridge x x x x x 1 0 0 Right most cartridge x x x 0 0 x x x Cartridge specified (fixed spacing) x x x 0 1 x x x 10 CPI (fixed spacing) x x x 1 0 x x x 12 CPI (fixed spacing) x x x 1 1 x x x Enable proportional spacing 0 0 0 x x x x x Select font 1 in cartridge 0 0 1 x x x x x Select font 2 in cartridge 0 1 0 x x x x x Select font 3 in cartridge 0 1 1 x x x x x Select font 4 in cartridge 1 0 0 x x x x x Select font 5 in cartridge 1 0 1 x x x x x Select font 6 in cartridge 1 1 0 x x x x x Select font 7 in cartridge 1 1 1 x x x x x Select font 8 in cartridge The fonts in each cartridge are numbered in order. To determine the number of a particular font in a cartridge, insert the cartridge into the printer and print the status sheet by pressing the TEST switch. The fonts for each cartridge installed will be listed in order (font 1 first, font 2 second, etc.). Enabling proportional spacing automatically selects the natural font spacing rather than any of the fixed spacing values. Spacing will be proportional only if it is enabled and the selected font is proportional. Expanded and condensed print modes are independent modes which are not cleared automatically. Expanded print will be propor- tional if the normal width for that font is proportional. Condensed print is always fixed spacing. The left most slot, as viewed facing the front of the printer, is slot one. If the selected font cartridge slot is empty, the printer will select the next higher font cartridge. If no higher font cartridge is found, the resident fonts will be selected. If PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB009 Pg004 a selected font number in a cartridge is not available, the printer will select the first font in that cartridge. Resident font 1 is Courier 12 pt, 10 pitch; resident font 2 is Prestige 10 pt, 12 pitch; resident font 3 is Gothic 7 pt, 16.6 pitch. For example, let's say that you have a cartridge installed in the left most slot, and that you want to select font number 3 in that cartridge, and that you also want to select 12 cpi. The parameter "(n)" to make this selection would be hex 51 (decimal 81). First, as with other applications, the desired font can be selected from the control panel. Second, if you are using one of the common word processing applications, you can change the font anywhere in the document by using the insert code capability. This feature, which is offered by most major word processing applications, allows you to insert a command sequence anywhere in your text. The command is sent to the printer at that place in the text. By inserting the command to select the desired font, you can change fonts at any point in the text. One of the examples attached to this announcement was printed by this method, using WordPerfectTM software. Refer to the PT-4223 User Manual for information on which codes are used to select fonts, and refer to your application software manual for information on how to use the insert code feature. If you are using the HP emulation with an MS-DOS application, there are three ways to use the optional font cartridges. As with all applications, the font cartridges can be selected from the control panel. A second way is to use the insert code capability which is described above. The codes used to select the font are described in the PT-4223 HP Personality Reference Manual. A third way is to use the font selection capability offered by many of the popular word processing applications (such as WordPerfectTM). These applicatons will allow you to change fonts anywhere in a document, in the same way that you change other parameters such as margins, character spacing, etc. Refer to the application software manual for information on how to select fonts in this way. NOTE: If you are using a Desktop Publishing application, such as VenturaTM, with the HP emulation, it may not be necessary to have the optional font cartridges in order to use a variety of fonts. This is because many Desktop Publishing packages have soft fonts, that is, they contain fonts in their software which are loaded down to the printer through software commands. Check the application software manual, or check with the software vendor's technical support group to find out whether you will need the optional font cartridges with your Desktop Publishing application. 6.0 PROPORTIONAL SPACING FONTS Fonts which use the Dutch and Swiss font styles are called PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB009 Pg006 proportional spacing fonts. This means that the spacing of the characters depends on which characters are printed. For example, in proportional spacing fonts, the spacing between upper case characters, which are larger than lower case, is greater than the spacing between lower case characters. In other words, the spacing of the characters is proportional to the size of the characters themselves. This differs from non-proportional spacing fonts (called "fixed spacing" fonts), where the spacing of characters remains constant (for example, 10 characters per inch), regardless of which characters are printed. The advantage of proportional spacing fonts is that they generally have a more pleasing appearance. Whereas with a fixed spacing font large characters may appear too close together, or small characters may appear too far apart, proportional spacing fonts appear just right. The disadvantage of proportional spacing fonts is that there are certain restrictions in using them. First, proportional spacing fonts should not be used when creating columns, such as are used in charts or tables. In addition, right justification will not work correctly with proportional spacing fonts. These restrictions result from the fact that the spacing between characters varies. As a result, columns do not line up correctly, and the right margin will not line up properly when using right justification. For applications which require the use of columns or right justification, only fixed spacing fonts should be used. The Courier, Prestige Elite and Letter Gothic fonts are fixed spacing fonts. 7.0 SUMMARY OF RESTRICTIONS FOR PT-4223 FONT CARTRIDGES Item Number Affects Description ------ --------------- -------------------------------- 1) MAI Business WORD Business WORD does not allow changing w/ all cartridges fonts within a document. The wiper heats up and becomes soft causing it to squeal. Check the fans for binding , if the fan is not running replace it or the AC circuit board which drives it. ORIGINATOR: J. Bloxton, J. Whalen PRINTER-GENICOM-5010--------------------------------FIB013 Pg001 FIB 00014 07/07/89 *** Horizontal Line Across Copy *** SYMPTOM/TEXT: A single horizontal line may appear when doing any type of printing (on-line, self-test, form feed). It will vary as to location on paper and sometimes there may be two lines if the first one starts about an inch from the top of the page. The line is about 1/16 inch thick and looks like 4 or 5 indivdual scan lines close together. It goes straight across page from the first print position to the last and is lighter in intensity than normal print. If this line happens to fall in an area where printing would normally occur, it will elongate these characters. FIX: The problem may be caused by obstruction of movement of the toner collection bottle that has to swing down every revolution of the print drum. Check to see that the cable harness that runs past the cavity where the collection bottle sits in is not the cause. This cable should be running on the outside of the black plastic cover and NOT the inside. (This may occur if you had this cover off and reassembled it improperly). Also check that the bottle is properly attached to the print drum assembly.
