PROBLEM DETERMINATION: To prevent this problem, an R/C network and an additional varistor have been added to the shuttle motor circuit. FIX: Machines affected by this problem will be early Model 3510 C30000 thru C30052 and Model 3150 C32000 thru C32018, manufactured by Basic Four. These components may be ordered in kit form: MOTOR NOISE FILTER KIT,PRINTER MM230660 INSTALLATION OF KIT IS AS FOLLOWS: 1) Remove brown wire from TB2-0 and install as TB2-4. 2) Install R/C network from TB2-1 to TB2-4. 3) Install varistor from TB2-3 to TB2-4. ORIGINATOR: TIC PRINTER-PRINTRONIX-P150,P300,P600-------------------FIB002 Pg001 FIB 00003 03/20/80 *** Ribbon foldover problem *** Misaligned ribbon guides cause ribbon foldover, misaligned ribbon spool hubs cause the ribbon to be off-centered on the guides, and misadjusted ribbon spool hubs cause ribbon slipage. *** REPLACE WITH NEW STYLE RIBBON HUB *** The part number shown below is for the new style (splined) ribbon hub. Note that the old style (o-ring) hub and the splined hub are interchangeable, and substitution may be made by ordering the new style hub from Sorbus West. NEW STYLE RIBBON SPOOL HUB MM230780 1) Set platen to the load position. 2) Remove ribbon spools from the ribbon hub. 3) Adjust the hub so that the bottom surface is 0.300 inches above the ribbon deck plate. 4) Reinstall the ribbon spools on the hub. If the ribbon spool is difficult to install on the hub with the tension arm released or if the tension arm is difficult to lock, adjust the hub tension screw until the ribbon spool locks in place on the hub without slipping. If the ribbon spool slips on the hub, tighten the adjustment screw. 5) Set the forms thickness lever to load position and load paper. 6) Run printer. The ribbon should center itself on the ribbon guide at the side that is supplying ribbon. If the ribbon is not centered, adjust the ribbon guide by rotating until the ribbon is centered. 7) Reverse the ribbon direction by shorting the ribbon skids at the spool supplying ribbon and repeat step 6 to adjust the other side. ORIGINATOR: TIC PRINTER-PRINTRONIX-P150,P300,P600-------------------FIB003 Pg001 FIB 00004 03/20/80 *** Excessive ribbon wear *** PROBLEM: On many units, the hammer tips are sticking out beyond the surface of the hammer bank front cover. This will put a constant drag on the ribbon, causing excessive wear and leaving dots or a fine line on the paper. FIX: 1) Remove ribbon assembly. 2) Remove the two hex-head screws from the anti-rotation arm, disengage anti- rotation arm from anti-rotation spring, and remove the cover. 3) Grasp the hammer bank pc board and pivot it 90 degrees upwards and away from the platen. 4) Inspect for hammers sticking out. You may use a flat object (6" ruler), carefully moving it over the surface of the hammer bank front cover. Hammer tips that are beyond the surface should cause the ruler to hang up. 5) Adjust if necessary as follows: carefully remove the cover. Shim (use mylar tape) on tape side of the cover, at the location of the six support pins, until all tips are just below the surface of the hammer bank front cover. 6) Reassemble. ***NOTE*** To prolong ribbon life, it should be suggested to users to turn ribbons over daily. Usually most printing is done at the left side (low print positions) of the printer. This will cause the ribbon to wear mainly in the upper half. Turning the ribbon over should equalize the wear and stress. When mask assemblies become available from the vendor, complete assembly shipments will resume. Note that the old style Ribbon Mask Assembly (MM230810) is no longer available due to the hammer hole diameter. PRIOR to installation of a shuttle received without a mask assembly, install the ribbon mask from the existing shuttle on the new shuttle and verify the following: o The holes in the mask are properly aligned with the hammer tips. The tips should be centered within the mask holes. o The mask holes should not interfere with the travel of the hammer tip. Since the carbide hammer shaft is a larger diameter than the steel tip shaft, masks with hole diameters less than 0.1 inch may cause mask-to-tip contact. This tractor assembly utilizes a notched wheel to interrupt an optical sensor rather than the reflective method employed on the old tractor assembly. The tractor cover contains a small pressure-loaded roller to maintain pressure on the paper against the sensor wheel. It is this pressure that causes the vertical mark on the forms (either carbon or chemical types). To correct this problem in the field, the pressure roller on the tractor cover should be removed. (Testing has shown that this will not affect performance of the sensor.) FIX: 1) Remove only the roller (not the roller mounting). 2) The roller mounting spring is a plastic material and will fracture easily. PROBLEM DETERMINATION: It has been discovered that partially-shorted or intermittently open lamps in the on line indicator of the Printronix-built printers can cause various problems by introucing noise into the control panel cabling. FIX: Replace the on-line lamp whenever such sympoms occur and any lamps which appear to be excessively bright should also be replaced. This does not apply to Basic Four- built printers with LEDS. *** NOTE *** The Basic Four Logic "B" PCBA (MM230021) should not be used with the lamp equipped operator panel, as the absence of pre-energization resistors seriously aggravates this problem. This is more evident on the P600 printer, since it shuttles at a higher RPM, but can also exist on the P150 and P300 models. Although the following procedures show how to reduce rattle, an absolute spring force value cannot be given. If rattle is not eliminated by the initial procedure, you must set the shuttle and counterweight preload according to procedure #3 and begin again with procedure #2. Lubrication of the cam and counterweight assemblies is explained in the 1st procedure and should be done first. FIX: Procedure #1: LUBRICATION (To be done at 2 month intervals) 1) Counterweight -- Remove the 2 nylon plastic port plugs with . pliers. Put 1 drop of SAE 20 oil or equivilent in each port and reinsert plugs. 2) Cam Wick -- Apply SAE 20 oil or equivilant until wick is saturated. Procedure #2: REDUCING RATTLE: 1) Place printer online so the shuttle starts up. Cycle the ON-LINE switch off and on to continue shuttle operation. 2) Apply heavy presure with your fingers to the right top side of the counterweight (forcing it toward the cam). a) If the rattle does not change, then add a shim (MM230260) against the shuttle spring. b) If the rattle decreases, then add a shim (MM230330) against the counterweight spring. Procedure #3: PRELOADING 1) Insert shuttle spring shims (MM230260) between the two circular washers on the shuttle until the gap between the cam and the left cam follower is closed, then add 3 more shims. 2) Insert counterweight spring guide shims (MM230330) between the spring seat plate and casting until the gap between the cam and right cam follower is closed, then add 3 more shims. CAUTION: There is a recessed socket head screw in the upper surface of the left-hand linear bearing block. This screw is factory adjusted and compensates bearing tightness for slight movement along the hammer bank shaft. These tractors can best be identified by a Paper Motion Detector Wheel assembly located on the left tractor assembly, tractor gates (flaps) 5" long by 1.5" wide and the Precision Handling Dev. Inc. name located on the underside of each gate. The Precision Handling Inc. tractor assemblies will be replaced by the standard Printronix plastic tractor used on their heavy duty P6000 and P9000 Series (600 and 900 LPM) printers. These tractors are larger (6"L x 2"W) and heavier duty than the Precision Handling units and have a more reliable PMD (Paper Motion Detector). The Printronix tractor has no wheel mechanism for sensing paper motion (this often caused paper skewing problems). The Printronix PMD uses LED detection of paper holes for monitoring paper motion. In addition, the PMD sensor is adjustable for varying sensitivity and can be removed from the tractor and unplugged from the signal cable for easy replacement. This method of detecting paper motion is the same as on the old metal tractors. The following table lists the available new plastic tractor assemblies, PMD sensor and part numbers. ORIGINATOR: Mike Ramunni PRINTER-PRINTRONIX-P150,P300,P600-------------------FIB037 Pg001 FIB 00038 MAI COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL 09/15/94 *** MAI 4201 (150/300 LPM) PRINTRONIX P150/P300 SPARES MATRIX *** Subject: MAI 4201 (150 & 300 LPM) & Printronix P150 & P300 Spares Model 4201 - MAI manufactured two versions of the 4201 printer, a 150 LPM version (also known as model 3150) and a 300 LPM version (model 3510). The 3150 and 3510 are earlier model numbers that are usually printed on the ID tag located on the back of the printer. Main difference between the 150 and 300 LPM is the 300 LPM has a larger diameter pulley on the shuttle motor, a slightly longer shuttle belt and a stronger shuttle spring than the 150 LPM. As a result the shuttle assembly, shuttle motor and belt have different part numbers, but all other components including PCBA's are identical between the 4201's. Both versions of 4201 were based on Printronix models P150 & P300. Model P150 and P300 - Printronix manufactured 150 and 300 LPM printers similar to the 4201's described above. Although the MAI printers were based on the Printronix models and many parts are interchangeable, there are enough differences in parts to cause failures. Identifying a 4201 About 95% of the 4201's have a control panel with horizontally positioned membrane type switches located directly in the bottom right corner of the large Lexan window on the front cover. Only very early versions of 4201's have a control panel with vertically positioned push button type switches (identical to all Printronix P150 & P300 printers) located to the right of the window in the metal portion of the front cover. 4201's have a 5 VDC paper feed motor that requires use of an MAI Power Supply Regulator PCBA to drive it (PTX P150/P300 printers have a 3.5 VDC paper feed motor). 4201's should have MAI Logic A1 and Logic B4 PCBA's inside. A Printronix Logic B4 will overdrive the LED's in the membrane switch panel and all LED's will be constantly illuminated (see Spares List attached). 4201 printers were designed to be compatible with the high speed Centronics parallel interface and have fixed terminator resistors that support 30 foot cable length. Unless modified, 4201's must see data bit 8 high in order to select the 96 ASCII character set (standard printers, including the PTX P150/P300 must have data bit 8 low to access the 96 character ASCII set). Identifying a P150 and P300 All P150/P300's will have the vertical push button type switches on the operator control panel (none have membrane switch panels). They should all have a Printronix part number on the Power Supply PCBA (see Spares List) and they should have a 3.5 VDC paper feed motor. Printronix printers have a variety of Logic A and Logic B PCBA's, but MAI PCBA's can be substituted if the printer is being run from an MAI system. An advantage of P150 and P300 printers is that they usually can be configured to operate from a PC Type Centronics parallel interface by installing the correct terminator resistor pack on their Logic A PCBA's. P150/P300 printers access the 96 character ASCII set with data bit 8 low. Note PT-4201(150) PT-4201(300) PTX P150 PTX P300 Control Panel 1 101578-001 101578-001 101578-001 101578-001. Note 2 Used on all MAI 4201 printers except very early models. Note 3 4201 (150 LPM) & P150 shuttles are interchangeable. 4201 (300 LPM) & P300 are interchangeable. All shuttles are refurbished using hammer springs with carbide tips. Note 4 The same hammer springs are used for all 4 printers. Only the Printronix L300 uses hammer springs with 16 mil carbide tips instead of 18 mil. L300's usually have an IGP-10 PCBA option. Note 5 Interchangeable between all 4 printers. Note 6 Interchangeable between printers of the same speed. Note 7 4201 (150 & 300 LPM) printers use a 5 VDC paper feed motor only. P150 & P300 printers use a 3.5 VDC motor only. Note 8 Although it is possible to physically interchange ribbon decks between 4201 printers and P150/P300 printers it should be avoided to prevent confusion. 4201 printers use a blower fan assembly and P150/P300's use a muffin fan assembly that cannot be interchanged. All other components are the same (ribbon PCBA, ribbon drive motors, sensors and hubs). Note 9 Blower fan assemblies are used on all 4201 printers and on only very early versions of P150/P300's. Ribbon decks with square shaped fan covers use the blower assembly. Decks with triangular shaped covers (almost all P150/P300) use a muffin fan assembly. Note 10 Ribbon deck fan assemblies are only found on P150/P300 printers, not on 4201 printers. Note 11 New tractors listed are interchangeable between all 4 printers. P/N's in Spares Table are latest Printronix plastic tractors. If printer has metal tractors, or plastic (Precision Handling Inc.) tractors with a PMD wheel, then both left and right tractors listed in the Spares Table must be used. Do not attempt to mate a new tractor with one side of the old style tractors. Note 12 PMD Sensor used only on latest tractors listed in Spares Table. Note 13 Regulator PCBA's are not interchangeable between the 4201 and P150/P300 printers. 4201's require 5 VDC for paper feed stepper motors and P150/P300's require 3.5 VDC. Using a 4201 Regulator PCBA will permanently damage a P300 feed motor in a few weeks. Using a P150/P300 PCBA on 4201 will cause paper feed problems. Note 14 4201 Logic A1 PCBA's are designed for use with early MAI host systems with high speed Centronics parallel interfaces and need data bit 8 high to select ASCII character set. P150/P300 Logic A1 PCBA's are more easily adaptable to industry standard host systems and have socketed terminator resistor pack locations for configuring P150/P300 on various systems.
